It is the branch of dentistry that deals with the health and diseases of soft and hard tissues around the teeth. The treatment of gum diseases, which are very common in the society, is performed by periodontology specialists.
Gum Diseases and Symptoms
Gum diseases first give symptoms with oedema and bleeding in the gums. Intensive smoking masks the symptoms of gum disease and causes the disease to progress insidiously.
Gingivitis
It is the first stage of the disease in which the inflammation is limited to the gingival margins. The destruction of the bone tissue around the tooth root has not yet begun. Therefore, it is easy to treat and can heal quickly. When gingivitis is not treated, the infection that starts at the gingival margin progresses to deep tissues and causes periodontitis.
Periodontitis
It is a disease that damages the gums and other tissues that support the teeth. The progression of this disease can lead to tooth loss. Over time, the teeth begin to shake and eventually recede.

Conditions Causing Gum Diseases
Gum diseases do not occur due to the accumulation of bacterial plaque. It can also occur in cases such as puberty, pregnancy and menopause when hormonal changes in the body are intense. In addition to these; malnutrition, inadequate oral care, stress and some medications used are among the causes of gum diseases.
